Jazz Worship November 5
On Sunday, Nov. 5, at the 10:30 service, we will be inspired by jazz worship led by Warren Cooper. Warren is a Presbyterian elder and music minister who leads choral workshops and worship development seminars around the country. A Philly native and a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music, he is considered a pioneer in jazz worship and sacred jazz. Warren has a weekly program on WRTI. We at Grace have come to know Warren through our partnership with Cedar Park Presbyterian Church. Don’t miss this opportunity—and be sure to invite a friend!
Greetings from North Korea
Join us on Saturday Nov. 4 for an evening of insight and inspiration as we welcome Jinhye (Esther) Jo, a North Korean who, with the help of the underground church was able to defect from oppressive rule. Jinhye will speak to the way in which the church - and her faith - were fundamental in bringing her to America. She will also discuss the outreach of a non-profit she's set up with her sister, who coincidentally is named Grace, and their work in assisting other hopeful North Korean defectors in finding asylum in the United States and a relationship with Christ.
Jinhye's discussion will begin at 5 pm in the sanctuary with a potluck dinner to follow in Muyskens Hall at 6 pm. For the potluck: if your last name begins with:
A-G, please bring a hot dish to serve 6-8 people.
H-M, please bring a salad or vegetable to serve 6-8 people.
N-Z, please bring a dessert to serve 6-8 people.
Parents of students in both middle and high school are encouraged to attend this event with their children. Childcare will be provided for infants and toddlers. Jinhye’s powerful story serves as reminder for all of us to consider what it means to “proclaim the gospel for the salvation of humankind.”
Those unable to attend Jinhye's Saturday discussion are invited to hear her speak during our Adult Education class on Sunday, Nov. 5 beginning at 9:30 am.
This event is brought to you by the Adult Education and Evangelism Teams and hosted by the Deacons.
Thanksgiving Food Drive
Please support Loaves & Fishes and Interfaith Food Cupboards by donating evaporated milk, box pie crust mix, box stuffing, and 12 oz cans of pumpkin. The collection box will be located outside church office until Nov 8. Your donation will greatly aid the food cupboards in creating Thanksgiving Baskets for those in need this season.
Grace Place – Upcoming Programs
On Friday, Nov. 3, Julie Coopersmith will present a program on Mindfulness. Have you ever awakened in the middle of the night and been unable to quiet your mind, to fall back asleep? Or perhaps you might have been in a movie theater and not been able to focus on the movie. If you have had these common experiences, Mindfulness might be for you!
Come learn about Mindfulness, why it matters, and how it might support you in living your life more fully. In this presentation, we will talk about what Mindfulness is, how it might apply to you, and do activities to support focus in the moment. Studies on Mindfulness show that it:
*Aids with building focus
*Supports stress reduction
*Facilitates curiosity and a non-judgmental spirit
Lunch is served at noon and programs begins at 12:45 pm. Come early and join your Grace Place friends in playing some favorite games, like Rummikub and Scrabble, or working on a jigsaw puzzle. This is a friendly community and we hope you will join us-and bring a friend!
Breathing Room Foundation - Yard Work
Yard work volunteers provide a huge service to a Breathing Room family. Surgery, recovery and cancer treatments often result in exhaustion and physical limitations.
Looking out the window at an overgrown yard increases a recipient’s stress. A yard work volunteer rakes, trims, plants and mows the yard back to a beautiful oasis for the family to relax and enjoy time together. We will be meeting on Nov. 4 at 9amat Grace and dividing into groups (rain date is Nov. 5 at 1:30pm). Sign up here.
Reimagine Vacation Bible School
You are invited to join us at The Borough Brewhouse, 208 York Rd, Jenkintown, on Nov. 8 at 7:30 pm for appetizers and a VBS brainstorming session! We’ll share ideas for our 2018 Summer Vacation Bible School program as well as ways we can make VBS even better! The Children’s Education Team welcomes your input as we re-vision how VBS works at Grace and encourages you to consider how you might support our efforts. We hope to see you there!
St. Andrew’s Service
On Sunday, Nov. 26 in our 10:30 am worship service we will remember Andrew, the first disciple of Christ and the patron saint of Scotland. The Gospel of John tells us Andrew was so moved after hearing Jesus preach that he returned with his brother Simon Peter to experience the power of Jesus’ message. Both Andrew and Peter were called to follow Jesus as disciples. When Andrew was martyred, he insisted on an X shaped cross, which now forms the pattern of the Scottish flag: a white X on a field of sky blue. Sunday's service will include a bagpiper, special music and liturgies reflecting our call to be disciples of Christ. Please invite friends and family to this service, and wear something plaid!
The Sunday School program needs shepherds each week to escort students K-5th grades from the sanctuary to their rotation classroom. In only 60 minutes of your week, you can help our children experience Grace! Sign up here or see the board across from the office to add your name. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Small Group Guest
Does your small group want a guest speaker to mix up your routine? Kelly Hudson, our Director of Children's Ministry, is looking to visit all of our small groups for 5-10 minutes to explain our new Sunday School curriculum and discuss the new direction of Children’s Education. She wants to open lines of communication, to help answer questions and hear from you about how to best impact our children at Grace. Contact email@example.com to schedule a visit!

This shelter ministry at Old First UCC in Philadelphia supports hunger relief efforts by providing a place for guests to enjoy a hot breakfast and fellowship. Guests are also offered the opportunity to select clothing, snacks and toiletries from the clothing cupboard each Saturday.

Cradle for the Christ Child
For over 20 years, Grace Church has shared holiday blessings with families in need through the generosity of our congregation. Help us continue the tradition of bringing joy to children and families in our community this Christmas through “Cradle for the Christ Child.” On either Sunday, Nov. 19 or Sunday, Nov. 26, take an envelope from the cradle. Then, purchase an item or two for the age/gender of child listed on the card and return those gifts to the Palmer Room by Sunday, Dec. 3.
We are also collecting gift cards for our local mission partners. Gift cards in increments of $15 to local grocery stores, or home supply stores such as Target or K-Mart, are truly appreciated by our partners. These should also be turned in by Dec. 3.
We are so grateful for your donations of both gifts and time. If you have any questions, please contact Michele Smeal at firstname.lastname@example.org or Meghan Zamborsky at email@example.com or (202) 361-6302.
