Adult Education: Family Matters!
Join us this Sunday, April 15, for “Understanding Addiction.” Is addiction a question of willpower or a brain disorder? Myths around alcohol and drug use; dopamine’s effect on the brain, and the possibility and means to recovery will all be covered.  Click here for a schedule.  Join us to learn more!

Telling our Faith Stories
How have we come to define ourselves as Christian? Presbyterian?  Were/are there members of our families and communities that have helped us in that journey?  On March 25, we’ll conclude our faith stories series with On the Road Again… “Two people journeyed from Jerusalem to Emmaus on that first Easter afternoon. A stranger joined them on this walk, and they began to share their story… The stranger shared his story…” Now that you’ve learned something about your own faith story, that of your family and the community in which you were raised, how do you go about sharing that information? When is it TMI? Too little?  Learn the fine art of sharing your faith story.

One Great Hour of Sharing
Isaiah 58 describes a new kind of fast, not to give up bread but to share it. Isaiah calls us to “loose the bonds of injustice,” to “let the oppressed go free,” to “share bread with the hungry” and to “invite the homeless poor into our homes.” We are called to offer help to those in need and restoration to those who have been broken down. One way we answer this call is through our gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing. For more information on how you can help visit the table outside of the office.

Grace Place
Come to Grace Place on March 16 and ring color-coded hand bells under the
instruction of Jenifer Eyre. Play along to familiar songs, as Jen holds up

Our Lenten film journey has brought us face-to-face with stories of transformation, covering such topics as racism; incarceration; aging; sacrifice; redemption and a host of other themes. Join us this Friday night at 6 pm for pizza and the film "My Name is Khan," for a look at post-9/11 America through the eyes of a Muslim citizen with Asperger's Syndrome.  Click here for a schedule of remaining films in our series.

Telling our Faith Stories - How have we come to define ourselves as Christian? Presbyterian?  Were/are there members of our families and communities that have helped us in that journey?  On March 18, we’ll continue to fill in our faith stories by exploring our family genograms where we may occasionally uncover some things that we didn’t know about before, including the occasional spiritual wound. Poet Robert Bly believes that one’s spiritual wounds are the source of one’s genius and “… precisely the place from which we will give our major gift to the community.” Come prepared to engage the source of your genius by examining your personal genogram. Wearing sweats encouraged!  Click here to learn more.

Spring Forward with Adult Education: Family Matters!
Our next adult education series begins on April 8.  In his letter to the church at Philippi, Paul offers these words: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:6-7) What might Paul have to say to those dealing with the anxieties of mental illness, addiction or gun violence? The Adult Education Team seeks to provide a safe environment for families and individuals to learn about these issues and their impact on all of us. Click here for a schedule.  Join us to learn more!

So how can we live into our communal faith lives while also nurturing our spirits?  Often, the answer lies in our stories. In this session, we’ll use a community genogram to begin framing our spiritual autobiographies. Bring your favorite candy to share!  Click here to learn more.

Telling our Faith Stories - What does it mean to be spiritual? Religious?  Is spirituality simply whatever religion is not? How have we come to define ourselves as Christian? Were/are there members of our families and communities that have helped us in that journey?  On February 25, we’ll continue our series on the topic of “Spiritual not Religious?”  According to the “Faith Matters” surveys, the most detailed ever taken of Americans’ religious and civic lives, a large number of Americans define themselves this way. So what does it mean for those of us in the Christian tradition? Are the two mutually exclusive, or is there room for both? Where and how does faith fit in? We’ll look at three different patterns of spirituality; take the “Spirituality 101” self-survey, and discuss what it means to reject religion in favor of spirituality. Click here to learn more.

Adult Education - The "Neighbor Series"
Adult Ed starts the new year by examining the commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Just who is our neighbor? On January 14, we will consider the question, “Who is our Neighbor in Jail?” Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr went to jail 29 times, largely on trumped-up charges? That he entered Morehouse College at the age of 15? That he was ordained to the ministry before he graduated from college? Come learn more about this civil rights leader as we listen to excerpts from “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” in his own voice. We will use images and scripture readings to reflect upon the meaning of MLK Jr’s message in our day.

Coffee Hour Treat!
At coffee hour this Sunday, we will once again be serving king cake to mark Epiphany.  We will crown the three “kings” who find the baby trinkets hidden in each of the cakes. Tradition holds that a king cake “draws the kings” to the Epiphany. The season for king cake extends from the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas (Twelfth Night and Epiphany Day), up until Mardi Gras, "Fat Tuesday" or Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent. Some communities have "king cake parties" every week through the Carnival season. In Portugal and France, whoever gets the king cake trinket is expected to buy the next cake for these get-togethers.  *****PLEASE USE CAUTION WHEN CONSUMING YOUR CAKE!*****
